Biography
Georg ZACHARIAS
Georg Zacharias, a swimmer from Berlin, won a bronze medal in the 100 yard backstroke behind his teammates Walter Brack and Georg Hoffmann. This was the first time the 100 back was swum in Olympic competition as there was no backstroke in 1896 and only a 200 backstroke in 1900. Zacharias also competed in the 440 yard breaststroke, and won the gold medal ahead of teammate, Walter Brack, and third-placed Jam Handy from Chicago, who later became the last surviving medalist of the 1904 Olympic Games. Zacharias was the world record holder in the 400 metre breaststroke from 1907-10 and in the 500 breast from 1904-10. In 2002 he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
