Biography

Fred Orlofsky started out competing for the Swiss Turners in Union City, New Jersey but later attended Southern Illinois University, where he won a 1961 NCAA title on the rings and placed second in all-around in 1961-63, adding an NCAA silver in 1962 on pommelled horse. Orlofsky won 1960 AAU titles in all-around, the rings, and parallel bars, adding a silver on the high bar, and bronze on the pommels. He was on the US team at the 1963 Pan American Games that won the team gold medal. Orlofsky later went into coaching, with a 30-year career at Western Michigan University (1966-96). He coached 11 conference championship teams and 67 individual conference winners. He also became a gymnastics judge, both nationally and internationally from 1964-2000. He was inducted into the US Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1985.
