Biography

Franz Schelle finished eighth with the West German four-man bob Germany 2 team at the 1956 Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympics. In 1955 they won the bronze medal at the World Championships. His team-mates on both occasions were Hans Henn, Jakob Nirschel and Edmund Koller.

Schelle’s finest moment came in 1962 when he won the gold medal in the four-man bob at the World Championships, this time with Ludwig Siebert, Josef Sterff and Otto Göbl. The crew was subsequently awarded the Silver Bay Leaf. Two years later Schelle finished fifth at the 1964 Innsbruck Winter Olympics. He won four West German titles; at two-man (with Göbl) in 1960 and 1962, and four man in 1962-63, Schelle was considered to be the pioneer of bobsleighing in Ohlstadt.
