After becoming a master ropemaker in 1927, Franz Andrysek nearly quit weighlifting to fully focus on his profession, but a fellow club member convinced him to continue. Not expected to medal in the 1928 Olympics, Andrysek pulled off a big upset in the featherweight class. In fourth place after two events, he set a stunning new World Record in the clean & jerk to move into first place. He nearly failed to receive his medal, still playing billiards in the Austrian team quarters when the closing ceremony began. The following year, Andrysek won his second international title at the European Championships. He ended his career with a bronze medal at the Europeans, and after winning his fifth consecutive Austrian title, in 1934.
