Ford Konno won six NCAA titles and during his career, which took off shortly after World War II, he won 12 AAU individual titles. He set his first world record at the 800m freestyle in 1951 and that record remained on the books for five years. In 1954 he added the world 400m freestyle record to his list of successes and it was almost three years before the great Murray Rose replaced Konno as the world record holder. After his college graduation, Konno married Olympic bronze medalist Evelyn Kawamoto, and he became a coach and teacher in Hawaii.
