Biography

Switching back and forth from lightweight to middleweight, Edvard Westerlund was the top contender in those classes in the early 1920s and, later in his career, switched back and forth between welterweight and light-heavyweight. As a lightweight, Westerlund won the World title in 1922 and Olympic bronze in 1928, and as a middleweight, won Olympic gold in 1924 and World Championships bronze in 1921. He also won bronze in welterweight at the 1933 European Championships, winning all those medals in Greco-Roman. Domestically, Westerlund won three Finnish titles: in 1927 in Greco-Roman lightweight, in 1929 in freestyle lightweight and in 1936 in Greco-Roman light-heavyweight. His brothers Kalle and Emil were also internationally known wrestlers, with Kalle winning the Olympic Greco-Roman lightweight bronze in 1924 and Emil competing in both 1912 and 1920 Olympics.
