Biography

Detlef THORITH

Discus thrower Detlef Thorith finished sixth at the 1972 München Olympic Games. His greatest moment came when he won the gold medal at the 1966 Europeans, leading an East German sweep of the medals. At the European Cup one year later he placed second and fifth in 1970. In 1967, 1970 and 1972 Thorith was East German champion, also winning the 1970 shot put.

After German reunification Thorith was suspected of systematic doping with oral Turinabol by Brigitte Berendonk and in documents released by the Military Medical Academy in Bad Saarow. Thorith later became a sports instructor and coached youth athletes at SV Preußen Berlin. He also had a brief stint as vice president of the Berlin Athletics Federation (1991-92).

Personal Best: DT – 64.82 (1972).
