Cyrille came to the UK from Cameroon in 2014. Whilst waiting for his asylum claim to be assessed, Cyrille had some difficult times, and says weightlifting saved him from some of his lowest moments. Several years after his asylum claim was approved, he now has multiple British weightlifting achievements under his belt, including winning the British, English and BUCS weightlifting championships in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. He also graduated with first-class and master’s degrees in mental health nursing from Middlesex University, and sees caring for others as a way of “giving back”. He now works in a Community Mental Health team in a psychiatric clinic.
He competed in the IOC Refugee Olympic Team for Tokyo 2020, obtaining a very good 10th place in his weightlifting event.
After the Olympic Games he broke his own British record and received British citizenship
