Béla Bay was known for his skill with all three weapons, and took part at the 1936 and 1948 Olympics. From 1951-61 and 1968-76 he was Hungarian national coach. He launched the fencing masters training course in 1961. Bay was awarded the Hungarian Olympic Order in 1992, and in 1999 was given the Hungarian Heritage Prize. Hungarian fencing also now awards a Bay Béla Prize for successful fencing athletes and coaches.
