Biography

Barbara Friedrich was a javelin thrower who competed for Newark State College and the Shore Athletic Club in New Jersey. At Newark State, later Kean University, she competed in four sports. In 1967, while at Manasquan High, she set the New Jersey high school record for the girl's javelin, throwing, 198-8 (60.55), and that mark would never be beaten until the javelin specifications changed, lasting for over 30 years. It was also an American record and the #2 throw in the world at the time. Friedrich was the 1967 Pan American Games gold medalist with the javelin and also won the AAU title in 1968 and the AIAW crown in 1971.
