Biography

Aubrey “Red” Newman was a career Army officer, serving for 34 years, and eventually reaching the rank of Major General. In World War II Newman led the 34th Infantry Regiment of the 24th Infantry Division during the Battle of the Philippines. For his actions in this battle, Newman received the Distinguished Service Cross, the Army’s second highest award for bravery.

Newman later wrote frequently for military magazines and published three books. His most common theme was leadership, and his books were, for many years, on the reading lists of several US military organizations. The Major General Aubrey “Red” Newman Award is given out by the US Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) to outstanding junior leaders with a commitment to developing their soldiers.
