Biography

Attilio Pavesi was the 11th child in an Italian family from the Emilia-Romagna region. In 1931 he had won the Coppa Caldirola, and early in 1932 he was second at the Giro di Sicilia. Only an alternate for the 1932 Italian team in the Olympic road race, he showed his form in Los Angeles in two selection races and was moved onto the team. Pavesi won the time trial road race and led Italy to gold in the team road race. After the Olympics, he had a short professional career. In 1933 he placed 62nd at Milano-Sanremo, and he was 52nd in the 1934 Giro d'Italia. At the beginning of World War II, Pavesi moved to San Miguel, Argentina where he opened a bike shop and organized cycle races. At his death in 2011, he was the oldest living Olympic gold medalist.
