Biography

André Wohllebe competed for SC Berlin-Grünau. In addition to his Olympic achievements he was an eight-time world champion. Wohllebe won the K2-500 and K2-1000 in 1983; the K4-500 in 1985, 1986, and 1991; the K4-500 and K4-10K in 1991; and the K4-1000 and K4-10000 in 1993. He also won four silver medals and five bronze medals at the Worlds.

In the German Democratic Republic Wohllebe was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit multiple times. After German reunification, he successfully finished an apprenticeship as a building plumber. He finished his career in 1996 and later, with Frank Fischer, brother of multiple Olympic canoe champion Birgit Fischer-Schmidt, was CEO of a canoe-specialty shop in Berlin. Wohllebe died after a short illness with pancreatic cancer.
