Biography

Fredel Kälin represented Switzerland at international cross-country skiing events throughout the 1970s. One of his earliest major results was fifth in the 4x10 km relay at the 1970 World Championships, but he found more success at the 1972 Winter Olympics. After finishing 17th in the 30 km event, he joined Albert Giger, Edi Hauser, and Alois Kälin in winning a bronze medal in the 4x10 km relay, which was Switzerland’s first Olympic medal in the cross-country skiing relay.

The Olympics were Fredel Kälin’s greatest success on the international stage: he was sixth in the 4x10 km relay at the 1974 World Championships and fifth, 27th, and 29th in the 4x10 km relay, 15 km, and 30 km events respectively at the 1976 Winter Olympics. He also won Switzerland’s prestigious Engadin Skimarathon in 1974. After retiring from active competition, Kälin entered the insurance business and became heavily interested in golf and course building.
