Biography

Alfonso Morales started out at Yale University but then attended the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, where he tried to make the baseball team. After failing that he turned to fencing. In 1959 Morales won the NCAA sabre championship. His teammates, Joseph Paletta and Roland Wommack, won the foil and épée, respectively, that year at NCAAs, the first time one school had won all three individual weapons. Morales later fenced at the 1963 Pan American Games, winning a gold medal in team sabre with the US team. In 1960 he was a US Navy ensign.
