Biography

Adi Baumgarten qualified for the 1936 Berlin Olympics as the German middleweight champion. He won his first two bouts at the Games, but lost against the eventual silver medalist Henry Tiller from Norway on points in the quarter-final. At the 1937 European Championships he was eliminated in the middleweight quarters, and in 1939 was eliminated in the first round. Baumgarten was the German heavyweight champion in 1941, and finished second in the unofficial European Championships at middleweight in 1942.

As a youngster, Baumgarten played football (soccer) and was a trained ship’s carpenter. During World War II he was recruited for the Eastern front and died during the Siege of Leningrad. His friends buried him on the road to Vitebsk.
