Hammer thrower Roland Steuk, later married to middle-distance runner Martina Kämpfert, finished fourth at the 1980 Moskva Olympic Games. Steuk also participated in the 1983 Worlds (11th), the 1979 and 1981 World Cups, respectively finishing third and seventh. In 1978 Steuk won the silver medal at the Europeans, also placing seventh four years later. In 1979 and 1981 he was third at the European Cup. Nationally Steuk won six consecutive East German titles, 1978-83. Steuk admitted taking anabolic steroids under the state doping programs in the former GDR, and in a later television interview, revealed that he had developed liver problems.
