Plaiter Reyes, who competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, was the first well-known heavyweight Dominican weightlifter. He won bronze medals as a super-heavyweight at the 1999 and 2003 Pan American Games, and won six bronze medals in weightlifting at the 1993 and 1998 Central American and Caribbean Games. Reyes became a weightlifting coach in the Dominican Republic, coaching the national team. He died quite young from a heart attack.
