Biografie

Peter Hussing, who never turned professional, had an unusually long amateur career, lasting over 20 years. Hussing, a heavyweight and super-heavyweight his entire career, competed at three Olympics, winning bronze in 1972 and being eliminated in the quarterfinals in 1976 and 1984. He also boxed at three World Championships, winning silver in 1982, and five European Championships, winning gold in 1979, silvers in 1971 and 1973, and bronze in 1969.

Hussing also missed two major international tournaments due to boycotts where he could have medaled – the 1977 European Championships held in East Germany and the 1980 Olympics. Domestically he won a record 16 German titles in 1969-83 and 1985. After his retirement from the ring, Hussing, who had studied architecture at the University of Siegen, worked as a construction manager in his hometown of Brachbach. Since 2008 until his death he was also the mayor of Brachbach.
