The young ice hockey player came to international attention when he was chosen the top forward at the Ice Hockey World Junior Championships in 1989.
After moving to North America Bure, playing for the Vancouver Canucks, led the National Hockey League (NHL) in scoring in 1993-1994. Six years later, it would again be Pavel, now playing for the Florida Panthers, who led the league in scoring.
At the Olympic Games in Nagano, in 1998, Bure was the leading scorer in the tournament with 9 goals. Five of those he scored in the semi-final against Finland, leading them into the final where they lost to the Czech Republic 0-1. Having fractured his hand less than six weeks before the 2002 Salt Lake City Games many were convinced that he would not participate. But the seasoned hockey player insisted on playing anyway, appearing in every one of Russia’s games and helping the team to a third-place finish.
Pavel and Valeri Bure set a season record for most goals by a pair of brothers, scoring 93 goals together.
