At the 1978 Europeans she won bronze in the shot put and silver in the discus. The same year she won a silver medal at the European Indoors. Domestically she won her only East German titles in shot put in 1978 (indoor and outdoor).

Droese was first married to Michael Droese, who was third in the 1974 European Championships 4x100 relay, but later married discus thrower Gerald Pufe. After her active career she was named sports manager of her home club Carl Zeiss Jena. Margitta Pufe gave birth to a handicapped daughter Jacqueline, but Margitta refused to blame East German doping practices demanded by the former GDR officials, stating that she took anabolic steroids only after her pregnancy.
