He reached the quarter-finals at the 1972 München Olympics, losing to upcoming Romanian silver medalist Ion Alexe; was eliminated in his first round bout at the 1976 Montréal Games by Soviet Russion Victor Ivanov; and claimed the bronze medal in 1980 at Moskva, losing the semi-final against Soviet Russian Pyotr Zayev. Fanghänel won East German titles in 1972 and from 1975-81.

Internationally Fanghänel earned two silvers at the Europeans in 1977 and 1981, and also a bronze in 1979 (as a super heavyweight). At the Worlds he won a bronze in 1978 and a silver in 1982.
