Armenian Israil Militosyan was one of the best lightweight weightlifters in the world during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Militosyan took up weightlifting in 1980 and rose to the Soviet national team in 1987. During his career Militosyan won Olympic gold in 1992 and silver in 1988, was World Champion in 1989, took silver in 1991 and bronze in 1987, and was the European Champion in 1989, winning silver in 1987 and 1990-92. Militosyan also won the Soviet title in 1989 and 1990. After the fall of the Soviet Union Militosyan continued competing, now representing his birth country Armenia, but with less success, his best place being sixth at the 1996 Olympics. During his career Militosyan set three lightweight world records in snatch. Militosyan finished his sporting career in 1999 and later worked as a weightlifting coach in Gyumri, Armenia.
