Biografie

In 1932 Hermann Engelhard was married to non-Olympian hurdler Ruth Becker, who became a four-time German Champion and set three world records in the 80 metre hurdles and the 4×200 and 10×100 relays. Hermann won the bronze medal in the 800 and a silver medal in the 4x400 relay behind the US at the 1928 Olympics. Domestically he was 1928 German Champion in both the 800 and 4×400 relay. Their son Bernd also became a middle-distance runner in the 1960s and their daughter Petra became a sprinter in the 1980s. Hermann’s brother Richard was among the best long distance runners in the 1920s.

Engelhard represented Darmstadt 98 (1924-1927), Teutonia 1899 Berlin (1928-1931), and SV Siemens Berlin (1932-1934). He later became a sports teacher for athletics for several years in the regional associations of the German Track and Field Associations in Württemberg and Hessen, along with his wife, and published Leistungsschulung des Mittelstrecklers (How to coach middle distance runners) in 1937 and Der Mittelstreckenlauf (Middle distance running) in 1950.

Personal Bests: 400 – 47.6 (1928); 800 – 1:51.8 (1928).
