Biografie

Helmut Lebert finished fifth in the double sculls at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics alongside Josef Steffes-Mies. Lebert had started out rowing singles and was West German champion in 1963, and second in 1964. He also won a single sculls bronze medal at the 1963 Europeans. As the German delegation nominated Achim Hill for the single sculls event in Tokyo, Lebert had to search for a partner for the double sculls.

In 1966 Lebert was ordained a priest in his hometown Passau. He was expected to be the official priest for the West German Olympic team at the 1968 Mexico City Games, but he renounced the faith for marriage.
