Biografie

German swimmer Helmut Fischer was the German 100m freestyle champion in 1933 and 1935-39. In the heats of the 1936 Olympic race in Berlin he set a new German record with 57.9 sec, which stood for 21 years until 1957. In the final of the 100m free he finished fifth, the same placing as with the 4x200m freestyle relay team. In 1934 Fischer was second at the European Championships behind the future 1936 Olympic Champion Ferenc Csik from Hungary.

During World War II Fischer was captured by the Russians and was held as a POW until 1949. Later he owned a tobacco bar and then a small restaurant in Bremen.
