West German Heinfried Engel placed eighth in the pole vault final at the 1968 Olympic Games as the third-best German, behind his teammate Claus Schiprowski and East German Wolfgang Nordwig. He had the same result at the 1971 European Championships. In 1969 he was nominated for this event but could not start due to the West German boycott. From 1970-72 he also started at the European Indoor Championships. Domestically he won the 1969 title, was runner-up in 1967-68, and Indoor Champion in 1969 and 1970. He also managed to set two European Indoor Records within one week in 1969 (5.22 and 5.23 m).
