Biografie

Don Gwinn was a hammer thrower for the University of Pittsburgh when he won the NCAA Meet in 1927 and 1929, finishing second in 1928. At the AAUs he was second in 1927 and third in 1926 and 1928. He later competed for the Westinghouse Club and the Illinois AC. In high school he played football on the undefeated 1922 St. Mary’s team in West Virginia, where he also set the state record for the hammer throw. His University of Pittsburgh and West Virginia state high school hammer throw records both lasted into the 21st century.

After college Gwinn worked for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company and the Atlantic Refining Company. He then became an auditor for 23 years for the Sterling Oil Division of the Quaker State Oil Refining Company in St. Mary’s, West Virginia.

Personal Best: HT – 49.96 (163-11) (1927).
