Ranked as high as number five in the world in juniors, Caroline Garcia attracted attention as a wildcard at the 2011 French Open. In the second round, she was a set and a 4-1 up against former world number one Maria Sharapova. Despite her eventual defeat, Andy Murray was among those impressed by the French teenager coached by her father Louis-Paul.

Despite winning her first WTA title in Bogota in 2014, Garcia took time to establish herself as a force in singles. More success came initially in doubles as she partnered compatriot Kristina Mladenovic to the French Open doubles title in 2016. France's last home success at Roland Garros had been Mary Pierce in the singles 16 years previously with 1971 the last time a French pair had won the women's doubles.
