Bernd Hartstein was an East German sports shooter who finished ninth in the 50 metres small-bore rifle event at the 1976 Montréal Olympics. At the Moskva Olympics four years later, he won the silver medal. Hartstein won, respectively, team gold, bronze and silver medals at the World Championships of 1981, 1982 and 1986, when they were held in his home country. In addition, he won an individual silver medal In 1985. He also won several East German small-bore rifle and air rifle national titles.
Hartstein later studied sports at the DHfK Leipzig and turned to coaching. After re-unification, he became Regional Chief Coach of Hessia in West Germany. In March 2001 he fell ill from leukemia and the Hessian Shooting Federation called for a bone marrow donor. Despite this, he died from the disease the following year.
