Born in 1993, Apurvi Chandela initially wanted to be a sports journalist but was inspired to become a shooter after watching Abhinav Bindra clinch gold at the Beijing 2008 Olympics. The road eventually led her to becoming a two-time Olympian.
Growing up, Apurvi Chandela received plenty of support from her father – a hotelier in Jaipur – and her uncle, who was so impressed by her penchant for the rifle that he built her a shooting range.
After wins at the school level and then at the nationals, Chandela’s first international achievement was the gold she claimed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as a 21-year-old.
The following year she made her World Cup debut and made India and herself proud with a bronze medal at Changwon, which helped her qualify for her maiden Olympic Games.
At Rio 2016, however, she ‘went blank’ in the 10m Air Rifle event and was eliminated early, finishing 34th among 51 shooters in the qualifying round at the Olympic Shooting Centre.
Apurvi Chandela described her Olympic debut as a learning experience and used it to push herself to new heights.
