Tommy Paul really burst onto the scene at the 2023 Australian Open. Having never previously gone past the fourth round of a tennis Grand Slam, the American made the singles semi-finals after a dream run including victories over seeds Roberto Bautista Agut and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Paul defeated compatriot Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals but could not overcome Novak Djokovic in the last four. Still, he became the first male American tennis player to reach the last four in Melbourne since Andy Roddick in 2009.
Paul was introduced to tennis by his parents in his hometown of Greenville, North Carolina, and began playing on clay courts when he was only seven years old.
